Big Boy Bed
So I caught Luke leaning over the side of his crib yesterday and he almost fell out. Time for a Big Boy bed I thought. We have a full size bed in Gavin's room, which will become Luke's room, and Gavin will go into the to crib that currently resides in Luke's room. Well, needless to say, things did not go well at nap time today. After 2 hours of listening to him cry and putting him back in bed, I decided to put him back in his crib. Throw Gavin's screaming onto the mix, and you can understand my current splitting headache. Any Moms out there with transition from crib to bed advice, this would be your cue to comment.

My only thought would make it be something special.... for instance, you and Mike make a big production out of it and shower him with attention and praise. Not sure if this would work but I find when I do this with Jocelyn it usually is a positive experience.
I potty trained her last week. She woke up Sunday we said good bye to her diaper, I gave her a present (a book on potty training) and other than pull ups at night she has been diaper free and very few accidents.
One other thing (from Super nanny) After Jocelyn had been sleeping in her big girl bed for awhile she regressed, trying to test my patience. I found when she did this, repeated out of beds, the second time I went in to put her back into her big girl bed I did not talk to her. First and second I tried to console/sweet talk her to bed but after that I avoided eye contact, did not say a word put her in bed and walked out. A few nights I actually sat in the room with my back to her until she fell asleep. It was a pain but now she goes right to bed.
I agree - make it something special and exciting (and don't go back)... make sure that the usual comfort items are still with him in the new room (blanket, stuffed animals, etc)... you can also have him help "move into the new room". We moved Daniela on her 2nd birthday and she helped carry all of her books & toys into her new room (which had been specially arranged/decorated for her)... she did well for a week or two, and then we had to put the supernanny stuff in Julie's post into practice (it works well).
Thanks ladies! Keep the comments coming!
Oh man, Ali. I totally feel for you! I am not the one to give advice on the bed issue. Finn started HATING his crib around 18 mos, so we bought him an IKEA toddler bed. He slept it is perfectly once I followed the steps in the Sleepeasy Solution book (they touch on transitioning to toddler beds). But once he got sick this past Nov., he came home from the hospital and has slept with us ever since. And let's see us try to break him of THAT habit. Yikes! I am going to have to start reading Julie's blog, it seems. :)
Does Luke still have his binky? That is something I want to tackle ASAP! I have to get rid of that thing.
Yep, Luke still has his binky. I was going to tackle that after the bed. I try to only let him have the binky at bed and nap time as is right now, but I will let him have it is he is really cranky.
I am so not ready to deal with the binky issue. I have found I need to prepare myself for these changes almost as much if not more than Jocelyn :)
One other idea, since you also have to deal with Luke being OK with Gavin taking his crib what about turning it into a "Blues Clue" type puzzle for Luke to solve....
Tell Luke Gavin doesn't fit in his baby crib anymore, we need to find him larger crib do you have any ideas? Then have him come up with ideas. Then hopefully if he picks his crib then ask Luke well where can a big boy like you sleep. What kind of bed does daddy sleep in. Be careful how you word thing so he doesn't try and sleep in your bed but it might be a way to use psychology to get Luke to think he is making big boy decisions and deal with two issues at once.
You could even go as far as making Blues clues that he has to find that will lead him to the answer.
We took our lil man shopping to every furniture store in town looking at bunk beds. He loved checking them all out and we talked about how he'd be getting his soon. When the day arrived he watched the man assemble the top bunk with the rails and he climbed right up there and was super excited for his "dunk bed." (For safety reasons we never put together the bottom bunk so he's not that high off the ground) That same day the crib was removed from the room - out of sight, out of mind - and he only mentioned the crib once and we asked if he loved his bunk bed and he said yes. We also have no toys in his room, only books, and a child safety lock on the knob so he can't leave his room. When his naps are over...(yes he's almost 3 and still naps at least 2 hours every afternoon) and in the morning he yells..."hey i wake up now" until we go into his room and get him.
That's all the advice I have, since its the only thing i tried and it worked like a charm!
Good luck!
